Did They Know It Was Christmas?
The short, sweet answer to the above question is, no. Why would you
want to know, if it was or not, when Christmas Day is just like any other in the year? With nothing, no hopes, no expectations,
no nothing. Bob Geldof, now Sir Bob Geldof wanted to make a change in all of that, so he gathered about him some of the brightest
and finest musicians of the time and recorded
Do They Know It's Christmas(Feed The World). It was released
November of 1984, and immediately debuted at Number One in Great Britain, and was Number One on the American charts two weeks
later.. The song was written by Sir Bob Geldof, and sold fifty million copies. It sold over 3 million copies in Great Britain
alone. It was produced & remixed by Trevor Horn. Midge Ure was the co-producer, and he personally accompained the
first relief shipment of over $70,000 worth of food and medical supplies to Ethiopa, on March 11, 1985.
Below are the lyrics to that memorable song, and to your right are
two lists, one of the musicians who appeared on
Do They Know It's Christmas(Feed The World) and the other, the musicians
who appeared in the Live Aid Concerts. There are also several links to World Relief organisations and several organisations
that are involved in Social Justice issues
Remember...hunger hasn't gone away, injustice is still with us, and
for a good part of the world,
they still don't know what Christmas is.
It's Christmastime, there's no need
to be afraid At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty we can spread
a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world at Christmastime
But say a prayer, pray for the other ones At
Christmastime it's hard, but when you're having fun There's a world outside your window, and it's a world of dread
and fear Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears And the Christmas bells that ring there are
the clanging chimes of doom Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you
And there won't be snow in Africa
this Christmastime The greatest gift they'll get this year is life(Oooh) Where nothing ever grows No rain or rivers
flow Do they know it's Christmastime at all?
Here's to you raise a glass for everyone Here's to them underneath
that burning sun Do they know it's Christmastime at all?
Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Let
them know it's Christmastime again
Feed the world Let them know it's Christmastime again
